March 11th 2018 in Corporate Worship

“Not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord’ will be saved.” This week’s passage of scripture is going to challenge our ideas of salvation. It is very easy to slip into legalism or into a liberty that is free of obeying the commands of Christ. This week, take some time to reflect on the relationship of your works (actions, attitudes, disciplines, habits) to the saving work of Jesus. In other words, what is the foundation of your faith? Let’s be challenged to be free in the Gospel this week and to walk with boldness declaring the goodness and kindness of God towards us in word and deed.

This Sunday, we will be learning about the fruit of faith in a person’s life and about the judgement of God. This is a difficult passage, but an important one as Christians the world over are hailed as hypocrites. Our lives need to reflect the goodness of God as we pursue a deeper, more intimate relationship with him. As you prepare this week, take some time to consider what fruit your life is producing as you abide in Christ through prayer and time in the Word.

This Sunday, we will be delving into Matthew 7:7-12. As a father of 3, I am more and more amazed that God has made us his children. Children have an incredible amount of needs. Cars, College Tuition, Diapers, Food… I often find myself overwhelmed by the needs of my children, but I love getting to take care of them, provide for them, love them well. Likewise, Jesus teaches us to ask God for what we need, and to recognize that God is not too preoccupied with other things in life or the world to be concerned with my depression, financial situation, medical problems or anything else. As we prepare for Sunday, take some time to evaluate your prayer life. Are you only talking to God about big things? Or are you giving God everything you’ve got. Let him shape you into maturity.

In today’s world, the court of public opinion is regularly in session, and everyone get involved whether through news media or social media. Jesus challenges our society from Matthew 7 when he says, “judge not, that you not be judged.” Of course, Jesus is not arguing for anarchy or a disordered society, but instead he desires for all Christians to judge themselves with clarity rather than to cast judgement upon others. Spend some time this week trying to uncover the sin you may not be seeing in your own life. Invite a trusted friend to help you in this journey, and come ready to challenge the sin of self-righteousness head on an to treasure anew the grace of Jesus towards you.

This Sunday we will wade through the waters of Matthew 6:25-34. Anxiety and stress are pervasive issues in our society. Walk into your local bookstore and there are plenty of self-help books designed to help you manage the stress and anxiety in your life. As Christians, we need to practice the management of stress, but at the core of the Christian life is the pursuit of peace with God that overcomes our circumstances and situations. Our hope lies beyond our daily dilemmas and issues! This week we will challenge one another as we look to the Savior who mediates and works on our behalf! Come thirsty to worship the Lord!

This Sunday we will gather and hear Matthew 6:19-24 taught. As one pastor and scholar put it, “This passage is about priorities, and the central priority is God himself.” This text will challenge your priorities and what you value. As Christians, we must value things differently than the world around us, because we are forced to reckon that what surrounds us and what we possess is temporary. Instead, we must value the eternal and that begins by valuing the people and relationships around us every day. What do you value? Are your values shaped by the eternal or by fleeting emotions?
